Pre-Work: Overview
The starting point for a new venture is either the novel technology that an entrepreneur wants to commercialize OR a societal problem/challenge for which there is no existing commercial solution. They are never both specified (i.e., the problem-side and the solution-side of the equation), as doing so limits the venture’s potential at the very start—it limits the commercial applications of the technology, or it limits the options available for solving a societal problem.
Working from either the technology or the pressing societal problem, high-level use cases or high-level impact opportunities are defined and evaluated for their basic commercial potential. The one with the greatest potential for delivering on investment requirements is selected as the “prime” use case (PUC) or opportunity case (POC).
